Providence Health & Services Chaplain Certified - Day Shift in Chewelah, Washington


Providence is calling a Chaplain Certified ( Chaplaincy Srvs , Day Shift, 1.0 FTE, 40 hours per week) to a dual location position, working three days per week at Providence St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chewelah, Washington including Saturday and Sunday at Providence Mount Carmel Hospital. In this position you will:

  • Provides assessment, intervention, and evaluate outcomes of a patient’s spiritual and emotional needs:

  • Patients seen and followed for spiritual support are referred in a variety of ways. Patient’s can be referred by any provider of care including physician, nurse, social worker, therapist, or other; by personal referral, by family, area clergy, or by direct referral by the chaplain herself/himself.

  • Demonstrates ability to provide initial visit. Reviews the medical record information provided regarding the patient. And/or if necessary, seeks out the appropriate medical personnel. Appropriately informs patient and family of chaplain roles, availability, and how to contact.

  • When appropriate to the patient’s condition, assesses the patient’s spiritual needs.

  • Develops an appropriate plan and intervention, evaluation and or referral based on the assessment/reassessment.

  • Demonstrates active listening, self and theological reflection.

  • Articulates theoretical and practical understandings rooted in sound theology, spirituality, and emotional perspectives.

  • Posses the ability to discern appropriate level of involvement in patient/families and/or care.

  • Maintains clear boundaries between professional and personal lives.

  • Demonstrates competency with Tim Ledbetter’s 5triad’s spiritual assessment process.

  • Given the differences of needs throughout the continuum of care, demonstrates accountability for implementing the policies for conducting a spiritual assessment, intervention and documentation according to her/his ministerial style in perspective to the ministry’s requirements.

  • Chart contacts, assessments, interventions, and follow-up contacts in the progress notes of the patient’s medical chart:

  • Demonstrates ability to document in the appropriate medical record section of the chart in order to enhance the whole person interdisciplinary care of patients and their family as defined by the ministry.

  • Utilizes legible penmanship and/or typing skills. To be determined upon hire through testing.

  • Competent with use of technology including phones, PDA’s, computers, computer programs (Microsoft, meditech, e-mail) To be determined upon hire through testing.

  • Provide ministry to individuals and families in their grief process:

  • Chaplains are available on a rotating basis 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year to assist in grief support and ministry.

  • Demonstrates ability to provide appropriate grief ministry to the cultural/religious spiritual background of persons served.

  • Demonstrates knowledge in the process of grief and loss.

  • Draws upon other interdisciplinary members and resources in grief ministry.

  • Demonstrates awareness of community resources available to patients/families upon discharge.

  • Chaplains provide competent spiritual care/crisis intervention for persons and families in their time of crisis:

  • Demonstrates ability to appropriately respond to crisis in the delivery of spiritual care.

  • Assesses and responds to the spiritual/ emotional needs of individuals or families during the crisis.

  • Spiritual support during a crisis may include the following:

  • Liaison between families, patients, staff and physician.

  • Listening to the needs expressed and offer appropriate support and intervention.

  • Assisting the patient/family with comfort needs.

  • Providing spiritual/religious counseling & comfort in the midst of crisis.

  • Provides or facilitates comfort support and complimentary modalities when appropriate.

  • Provide sacramental ministry to a variety of faith denominations:

  • Appropriately assesses all requests for sacraments and provide access whenever possible.

  • Provides opportunities for prayer in response to patient/family request and/or desires.

  • Assesses the spiritual and religious resources of the person.

  • Ability to work in unison with the religious/spiritual support person of individuals and families.

  • Chaplains will provide or assist in providing spiritual resources within the patient/family faith tradition.

  • Demonstrates skill at assessing the appropriate needs, resources, and alternatives when necessary.

  • Conducts prayer services, mission celebrations, and religious services as appropriate.

  • Knowledge of liturgical seasons and participates in chapel care.

  • Participate in the morning report, patient care conferences, family conferences, and on hospital committees as assigned:

  • Participates regularly in the morning report offered on their assigned units.

  • Chaplains participate in conferences by providing appropriate information to the team which is helpful and insightful in their interdisciplinary approach including discharge planning.

  • Demonstrates ability to appropriately raise questions on ethical, spiritual and emotional concerns as well as issues related to patient, family and their relationship.

  • Able to round and interact with staff for referrals, patient care discussions and follow-up.

  • Assists other interdisciplinary members in approaching delicate issue related to illness, preparing for death, and ethical concerns.

  • Maintain current knowledge of medical ethics and Catholic Healthcare ethics:

  • Chaplains are well informed on the Ethical and Religious Directives of the U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops.

  • Chaplains are informed and knowledgeable on Advance Directives: Livings Wills, and Durable Power of Attorney for Healthcare.

  • Chaplains are familiar with ethical literature and case consultation process as defined by the ministry.

  • Advance Directives:

  • Competent knowledge of Living Wills and Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care.

  • Demonstrates ability to facilitate discussion, educate and facilitate completion of advance directives.

  • Participates in staff and community education.

  • Routinely draw on the skills of others (i.e., Eucharistic Ministers, CPE students, church visitors, and area clergy) in meeting the diverse needs of patients/families/staff:

  • Serves as unit resource persons, technical advisors, and/or didactic presenters for the on-going education of Eucharistic Ministers, C.P.E. students, or area clergy/church visitors.

  • Supports Staff:

  • Demonstrates appropriate ministry to staff including initiating, deepening and terminating support as well as debriefing and referring to counseling.

  • Able to resolve conflict:

  • Demonstrates competence in conflict resolution skills and processes.

  • Facilitate group processes:

  • Demonstrates expertise in group processes and facilitation.

  • Maintains Board certification:

  • Maintains board certification with appropriate nationally recognized certifying organization: NACC, APC, NAJC, AAPC, CAPPE, and ACPE.

  • Actively support mission leadership:

  • Collaborates with the spiritual care leader, mission leader, and mission council in developing and implementing mission projects.

  • Role model and resource to staff for interpreting and integrating the mission and values.

  • Extend spiritual care into the community:

  • Each chaplain is involved in at least one community activity, organization, or board each year.

  • Participates as a member of the spiritual care team:

  • Demonstrates ability to be personally accountable yet able to function intra-dependently.

  • Actively promotes spiritual perspectives in the continuum of care.

  • Uses referral resources in their ministry.

  • Shares accountability in working in partnership with others.

  • Encourages team cooperation.

  • Fosters the development of trust within the team.

  • Supports team decisions.

  • Takes initiative in resolving conflict.

  • Inspires and motivates team members.

  • Acts as a positive role model.

  • Patient/family focused.

  • Provides care appropriate to the patient population:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development and possesses the ability to respond to specific issues and data reflective of the patient’s status.

  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide for the primary population of patients served in the department.

  • Responds appropriately to the age related needs and considerations.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Sufficient for license/registration

  • Board certified chaplains have and maintain current certification with one of the nationally recognized certifying organizations for chaplains: NACC, APC, NAJC, AAPC, CAPPE, and ACPE

  • Some positions may require a drivers abstract indicating a valid Washington State Drivers license in good standing
